Ignition Coil
The RX-8 is infamous for ignition coils that fail regularly. There is a wide range of running problems that come up from bad coils. If not repaired in a timely manner, the catalytic converter will also be damaged. Obviously, this will multiply the cost of repair.
There are kits to convert RX-8’s to use other types of coils but those seem to have limited success too. Many aftermarket stock fit coils seem to be hit or miss in quality; One set supplied by a client from a local auto parts store didn’t even last a whole day!
We have sourced ignition coils that are of as good of quality as the Mazda units but are about 1/3 less money.
There are also a couple of things that can help extend the life of the coils. We offer a phenolic spacer to better insolate the coils from their metal bracket. Additionally, we re-gap the spark plugs to .035” when they are serviced here. Although it is no ‘magic bullet’, these simple and inexpensive changes do help.
* Quality replacement
* Lower cost than Mazda
* Prevents damage to catalytic converter
* Phenolic spacer to extend service life
